Dog Owner's Guide

What to know before a dog park day in Ann Arbor.

Ann Arbor leans heavily on the Huron River for its dog walking life. There are only two formal off-leash yards in the city limits, so most regulars build a routine around the leashed riverside trails and the long loops at County Farm.

    Leash laws & off-leash rules

Michigan state law leaves leash rules to municipalities.

Ann Arbor city ordinance requires dogs to be leashed in all parks and nature areas except inside the two designated dog parks: Swift Run on the south edge and Olson on the north side. Enforcement is real in nature areas like Barton, Argo, Bandemer, and Eberwhite, where wildlife protection is the stated reason. Saline's Mill Pond Park, twelve miles south, has its own fenced dog area with river access.

Daycare and boarding facilities in town typically also require DHPP and bordetella, and many add canine influenza given Michigan's outbreak history. None of the off-leash areas check at the gate, but keeping boosters current is sensible if your dog mixes regularly.

    Timing

    Climate & seasonality

Winters are long and snowy, with the dog parks open year-round but the unpaved trails alternating between frozen and muddy from December through March.

Spring is wet at every park, and Swift Run's open field stays soggy until things dry out. The peak window is May through October. Mosquito and tick pressure builds fast in summer, especially along the river and at Dolph and Eberwhite.

Olson and the dog yard sit on the north side off Dhu Varren Road. Argo, Bandemer, Riverside, and Gallup form the Huron River corridor running through the center of town. County Farm and Buhr-area parks fill the central walking circuit, while Dolph and Eberwhite cover the wooded west side.
