Dog Owner's Guide

What to know before a dog park day in Rehoboth Beach.

The Delaware beaches turn into a dog scene in shoulder season. Rehoboth, Lewes, and Dewey ban dogs from the main town beaches in summer, so the off-leash crowd shifts to Gordon's Pond and the Cape Henlopen stretch (year-round dog-friendly), the Junction & Breakwater rail-trail for a shaded walk, and the fenced yards inland at Lewes Unleashed and Millsboro.

    Rules

    Leash laws & off-leash rules

Delaware state law requires dogs to be under control in public; Sussex County and the City of Rehoboth Beach both enforce a leash ordinance outside designated off-leash areas.

From May 1 through September 30, dogs are banned from the Rehoboth, Dewey, Lewes, and Bethany town beaches between 9:30am and 5:30pm. Cape Henlopen State Park (including Gordon's Pond) allows leashed dogs on the beach year-round, and the inland Lewes Unleashed yard is the only true off-leash space in the area.

Cape Henlopen and Delaware Seashore State Parks both charge a per-vehicle entrance fee in season ($5 in-state, $10 out-of-state day rate at last posting), and the same pass covers the rest of the Sussex County state park system.

    Health

    Vaccinations & requirements

Delaware state law requires rabies vaccination for dogs over six months old; the city park gates don't actively check, but the private Lewes Unleashed park does verify before issuing a key fob.

For boarding or daycare nearby, expect the standard DHPP and bordetella checks on top of rabies.

    Timing

    Climate & seasonality

The town-beach dog ban runs Memorial Day through September, which makes May and October the peak windows for ocean access.

Summer humidity is real and the Gordon's Pond lot fills by 9am on August weekends. Winter beach walks at Cape Henlopen are uncrowded and open all day; the Junction & Breakwater Trail stays usable except after heavy rain on the gravel section.

    Geography

    Where to go, by neighborhood

Lewes anchors the north end with Lewes Unleashed (private, fenced) and Great Marsh Preserve (small leashed nature walk).

The Cape Henlopen corridor between Lewes and Rehoboth holds the year-round dog beach at Gordon's Pond and the Wolfe Neck access for the rail-trail. Rehoboth itself has Lake Gerar for a leashed loop two blocks from the boardwalk. South of the inlet, Delaware Seashore State Park spans the bay-and-ocean strip toward Bethany. James Farm Preserve and Millsboro Dog Park sit further inland in southern Sussex County.
