Presumpscot River Preserve
Riverbank trails with falls, swim spots, and a 10-minute drive from downtown
About this park
A 48-acre preserve along the Presumpscot River on Portland's north edge, with a short steep descent to the riverbank and trails branching to a small waterfall in one direction and a longer placid riverwalk in the other. Several spots along the bank let dogs wade in for a quick swim.
Amenities
What visitors say
Synthesized from 232 Google reviewsReviewers point to the river-access wade spots, the small waterfall on the spur trail, and the fall foliage as the reasons this preserve outranks bigger parks in the area. Spring and summer reviews call out how lush and quiet it gets a few minutes in.
A river-walker crowd that overlaps with regulars from neighboring Falmouth Foreside, friendly but mostly head-down on a hike. Weekend afternoons get genuinely busy.
Best for
Before you go
Trails are leashed, but the swim entries draw plenty of off-leash regulars on quiet mornings; sightlines from the bank are short, so a dog with strong recall does best. Parking on Overset Road is tight, and weekend midday usually means circling.
