About this park

A free, fenced dog park in Candler with separate areas for dogs over and under 30 pounds. After Hurricane Helene wiped out most of Asheville's other public options, it became effectively the closest in-city park for Buncombe County residents. The large-dog side has the most room; the small-dog side is notably tighter.

Before you go

Shade is limited, so go early in the morning or late in the afternoon on hot days. The ground is mostly clay dirt and dogs come home filthy; plan for a rinse. The park has occasionally been padlocked without warning, so have a backup plan like Mills River Dog Park if you're driving from across town.

Frequently asked

Is there a fee or permit to use the park?
No. It's free and open to the public, with no permit or membership required.
Is there a separate area for small dogs?
Yes. Dogs under 30 pounds get their own fenced section, kept apart from the 30-plus side. The small-dog area is much tighter than the large side, so it can feel cramped when a few dogs show up at once.
Is drinking water available on site?
There is a water station, but visitors have found it out of service or rusty at times. Bring your own water so a broken fountain doesn't cut a visit short.
What is the ground surface like?
Mostly bare clay dirt, with little grass or mulch. Dogs come home muddy after playing, so keep a towel in the car and expect a rinse afterward.
Could the park be closed when I arrive?
It has been found padlocked without notice on days it would normally be open. If driving from across town, line up a backup like Mills River Dog Park in case the gate is locked.
