Dog Owner's Guide
What to know before a dog park day in Boise.
Boise's off-leash system runs on three tracks: the fenced destinations that anchor the map (Dog Island, Storey Bark Park, Morris Hill), the foothills trail system at Military Reserve for dogs that need real mileage, and a dozen neighborhood parks that activate off-leash twice a day on a schedule.

Rules
Leash laws & off-leash rules
Idaho has no uniform statewide leash law; Boise City Code requires dogs to be leashed on all public property outside designated off-leash areas.
Read moreRead less
Fenced off-leash parks (Dog Island, Morris Hill, Molenaar, Discovery Bark Park) operate year-round. Neighborhood parks (Manitou, Cypress, Redwood, Ann Morrison) use posted scheduled off-leash hours, typically sunrise to 10am and 4pm to sunset. The Military Reserve's off-leash area is posted on trailhead signs. Violations on scheduled-hour parks draw neighbor complaints and occasional enforcement.

Access
Permits, licensing & fees
No entry fee or permit required at city parks.

Boise requires a dog license for any dog over six months, with proof of current rabies vaccination. Surrounding cities (Meridian, Garden City) have their own licensing but identical fee structures. Clubhound is a private members-style venue requiring proof of vaccinations before first entry; it is not a city park.

Health
Vaccinations & requirements
Rabies is required by Idaho state law and for the Boise city license.

City off-leash parks don't verify at entry. Clubhound actively checks vaccination records (rabies, DHPP, bordetella) before granting access, and spaying or neutering status may affect membership at some private venues. Standard boosters are expected practice anywhere dogs mix regularly.

Timing
Climate & seasonality
Boise winters are mild by Mountain West standards but still reshape the park map.

Dog Island's turf turns to mud from December through February; regulars switch to Ann Morrison Park's winter off-leash field, southeast of the fountain. The Military Reserve stays runnable through light snow but gets slick on shaded north-facing sections. Summer is warm rather than scorching (unlike the desert parks to the south): highs in the 90s July through August mean early morning runs before 9am are the comfortable window. Foxtails appear on foothills trails and open fields in late spring; check paws and ears after any Military Reserve visit.

Geography
Where to go, by neighborhood
Downtown and Central Boise cluster the highest-use destinations: Dog Island just north of downtown, Military Reserve directly above it, Morris Hill Dog Park and Morris Hill Park in the central-east, and Ann Morrison Park along the Greenbelt to the south.

West Boise's parks (Molenaar, Redwood, Mariposa) are quieter and draw a neighborhood-only crowd. Garden City hosts Clubhound, the only supervised indoor-outdoor option in the metro. South Meridian (Storey Bark Park, Discovery Bark Park) leans suburban and purposeful: good turf, newer facilities, less crowded than the city-center parks.
